INDIVIDUAL REVIEW : Work
Film review: Work
Director: Aneil Karia
Produced by: Scott O'Donnell
Work a captivating short film which made me feel tense, uncomfortable, and emotional. From the start, I could feel that something wasn’t right, even though nothing big was happening yet. It didn’t waste time ,it pulled me in straight away with its quiet but powerful tension.
The film is about how someone can look calm on the outside but fighting battles on the inside. The central message is based on pressure, racism, and how it builds up until someone can’t take it anymore. There was no major twists in the film but due to the way things unfolded at the end felt real and surprising.
The characters, especially the main girl, felt real and easy to connect with. Although she spoke less, you could see her pain and struggle through her face and body. Her performance was strong and believable.

Visually, the film came in smooth but powerful. Some shots stood out and the way the camera followed her closely. The lighting and colours were soft but added to the feeling of pressure building and trapped in her world.
The sound and music were not loud, but fit the mood perfectly. The few sounds and the music used helped show her emotions without needing many.
Overall, the film was short but very powerful and Yes! it met my expectations and even went beyond. It was given, showing deep emotions with very little talking. The only weakness might be that some people may not fully understand what’s going on if they aren’t paying attention. It made me feel sad, frustrated, and even a little angry for her. I would absolutely recommend it because it’s not just a film it’s a message which stays stays with you even after the end of the film.
Story Arrangement in the Short Film work
The short film work follows a young Black girl as the protagonist, whose day begins like any other, ordinary, quiet, and structured. However, her internal world and external reality soon unravel into emotional chaos. She is clearly shown to have a specific objective or goal: to complete her day while maintaining her emotional control and identity in a world that continuously tests her limits.
Her goal is not just physical, but psychological fighting to remain composed and strong. The antagonist in this story is not a single person, but the systemic oppression, racial microaggressions, and emotional tension that surround her throughout the day. These are presented with set principles such as society’s expectations, silent racism, and power dynamics she has no control over.

She is willing to struggle, as we witness her navigating through various spaces a dance studio, a train, a party, each filled with small yet piercing confrontations. Her face often remains calm, but her body and expressions betray the pain and pressure she is trying to contain.
Eventually, she finds herself in a situation of win or lose it all at a birthday party, where she can no longer suppress her emotions and breaks down. This moment is her internal explosion, a loss of control that also feels like a release.
The film ends on an open but emotionally resonant note. It suggests that her journey is ongoing , she has not yet fully resolved the differences in principle between herself and the world, but we are left feeling her pain, her humanity, and the weight she carries each day.
