FILM REVIEW: LAZY SUSAN (BFAMP28019)

Lazy Susan was a short film that left me impressed. How can one wanting to remain idle lead to a master invention? The quote by Ben Franklin in the introduction of the movie made me curious to know how true the statement is. Susan is a girl whose family believes is lazy and creates equipment just to remain idle. She ends up saving the family business with her invention and becomes a famous inventor. The story is not just about laziness, but that “There is always a solution to a problem”. The film took me by surprise at the later part when Susan was to make a speech, but it turned out to be the close of the short film.

The characters were realistic, and their emotions were clear. The strong performance by  Monica Hong, who played Susan, a lazy yet creative person, was hilarious yet beautiful. Susan’s mum stood out positively to me, because she knew the strengths and weaknesses of her children and utilised them well, like favouring Annie to continue working around the house and restaurant, and getting Susan out of her comfort zone led to inventing gadgets to help around the house and restaurant. The relationship between Susan and her family members was what led to the name of the invention.

The film was simple yet visually colourful. The shot of Susan at the dining table, where a single light bulb reflects on her, with the black background and the camera zooming in on her, making the audience feel that she's being stuck in a situation and looking for ways to escape, was striking and interesting to me. The use of blue(cool colour) for Susan, yellow(warm colour) for Annie, red and orange for the environment, is very effective, communicating the differences in personality between Susan and Annie.  The film makes use of artificial lighting, creating a mood of an advertisement and a hot, appetising environment. The framing brings the audience's attention to the characters, their emotions and body posture.

The sound greatly helped the storytelling. The calm melody at the beginning showed Susan’s personality, and the fast beat music showed Annie’s personality. The dialogue was audible and clear. The sound of the audience chatter and the laughter of people showed the happy and busy restaurant, and the silence is used to show the calmness and thought of the characters to the audience.

Great inventions have humble beginnings indeed. The film showed a Chinese lifestyle. It creates a great amount of depth, making it very powerful. The limited dialogue on the part of the character Susan focuses on her inventions and how she utilised her weakness. I felt proud of Susan for making her weakness an unquestionable talent. I would recommend the film to others because of Susan’s behaviour. Susan’s family deliberately pressured her not because they felt she was lazy, I think they saw the potential in her and knew how to get her to use it. “Everyone is unique and creative in their own way”.
