Movie Review: Nursery Rhymes (Short Film)
Directed by: Tom Noakes
Runtime: ~5 minutes
Genre: Psychological Drama / Thriller
Review:
Nursery Rhymes is a haunting and minimalist short film that griped me from the first
second. It begins with a shirtless man singing the children's song “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” in a strange, eerie tone. At first, it seems bizarre—but as the camera slowly pulls
back, the true context is revealed.
The man, who serves as the film’s protagonist, is surrounded by police. Tension mounts. He is holding something—or someone—just out of view. As the camera continues to
track backward in one continuous take, the terrible truth comes into focus: he has a child in his arms.
The antagonist here is not a person, but the internal pain or mental breakdown that has brought him to this tragic moment. The police, though seemingly opposing him,
represent a desperate effort to prevent further harm.
Without dialogue or special effects, Nursery Rhymes delivers a powerful emotional
punch. The twist is subtle, the storytelling is patient, and the single stake cinematography keeps you locked in, forcing you to watch and wonder until the chilling end.
A brilliant example of tension, mystery, and emotional storytelling in under five minutes. Unsettling, thoughts provoking, and unforgettable
